About
Coats Patons
Patons and Baldwins Ltd. was built in 1922 and opened in 1923 being the first overseas venture for the British textile company. By 1966 it had trebled in size and was the largest mill of it's type in the Southern Hemisphere. In 1967 at it's height, they employed 2247 people, housing their own Doctors, Nurses and Soccer Team, who won the State Title twice and Northern Title 10 times. It was also the State's largest employer of Women. Ongoing changes saw it renamed Coats Patons in 1969.
The reduction of tariff protections in the early 1970's eventually saw the total closure of Coats Patons in August 1997. The Door Of Hope Christian Church purchased and reopened the building in November 2003 and the space now incorporates the Church, Launceston Conference Centre, Before and After School Programs and mutiple private businesses as well as Door of Hope Central Storage.
